TOOTING & MITCHAM
Not an area to venture into without
a good map (for general map of the area click
here> (but simpler map to come in due course). This formerly great
club is soon to move to the Mitcham/Carshalton border some two miles south
west, but for now occupies its once-famous Sandy Lane ground tucked away
in a dry part of Mitcham.
The ground is badly served by public transport, Tooting station on the
Thameslink loop is about a mile away,Mitcham tramstop is further, (but
near the new ground), the Underground at Colliers wood or Tooting Broadway
further still. Mitcham town centre is walking distance from the ground
(about a mile), and here the best option is probably the KINGS HEAD, Upper
Green, a large Young's house marooned in the messy new pedestrianisation/one
way system. Opposite is a newish Wetherspoon's, the WHITE LION OF MORTIMER.
Half a mile further down the road to Sutton is a whole possee of pubs
around the Cricket green, a pleasant spot if you could wish away the trraffic
but the pubs have all seen better days.
Getting out of the train at Tooting station the GORRINGE PARK TAVERN is
adjacent- a Young's pub but not one serving the most consistent beers.
Coming by tube and alighting at Tooting Broadway try the CASTLE, again
Youngs,38 High St, a decent option with food available.
However, those of you who would go the extra mile should start here:-
The *SULTAN, Norman Rd, Colliers Wood, is the only London tied house of
Wiltshire's Hopback brewery, of Summer Lightning fame, and is place of
pilgrimage for the serious connoisseur on that account. The 1950's exterior
will not appeal to all, but inside the two roomer is very agreeable and
serves a full range of the award winning ales, although no food. You will
need an A-Z to find it, and at two miles from Sandy Lane its not easily
within walking distance.
Coming by car from the Wandsworth side, recommended is the *PRINCE OF
WALES, 646 Garrett Lane, Summerstown, another Young's pub, still with
three rooms and sporting a nice tiled exterior. Lunchtime food.
If you are coming up from the south by car, best bet is probably the Windsor
castle, Carshalton, with a wide range of ever-changiing beers and very
good food (see Carshalton page)
