HITCHIN
Not a regular haunt of
your scribe, this Hertfordshire town sandwiched betwen the sprawling
eastern suburbs of Luton and the now very sizeable former 'garden
city' of Letchworth is a place of some antiquity and although
not a mecca for unspoilt top quality boozers there is at least
some real choice here:-
Traditionalists might
head for the RADCLIFFE ARMS(1), Walsworth Rd, not far from the
station, where there is still an old fashioned public bar (and
a lounge if you prefer), with Ushers and Wadworths 6X to drink
(no food).
Not far away from station or the ground is the VICTORIA*(2), 1
Ickleford Rd, an interesting, Victorian Greene King house catering
mainly for locals with lunchtime food available.
Worthy of note if only for its rarity as a sports club offering
cask beer, the RUGBY CLUB (3) at St George's field in Old Hale
Way has won CAMRA awards, and offers Batemans XB, Brains, and
guests.
Out of town to the south,
an interesting option is the RED LION* at Preston,(map
here), Britain's first community owned pub! Green King IPA
is a fixture with guests usually from local breweries. Food is
home cooked and freshly prepared. On the northern outskirts of
town at Ickleford is the PLUME OF FEATHERS*(4), (turn right off
A600 Bedford Rd for 400yds), an unspoilt pub offering London Pride,
Boddingtons, and 6X alongside guest beers. Food here is also recommended.
