HEYBRIDGE
Pleasant day out close
to the Blackwater estuary in Essex, Heybridge lies a couple of
miles beyond Maldon. If you're coming in this way, try the Queen's
Head, The Hythe, Maldon (no Sat food) with Greene King and guests,
in a nice spot overlooking the quayside.
In Heybridge itself, best bet is the MALTSTERS, (Hall Rd, close
to jct of Heybridge St, B1022, see street map below), which on
last reports was a nice old fashioned 2-bar pub with gravity dispense-
recent reports please? This is another Greene King house.
Time permitting, a trip down to Heybridge Basin is recommended
(see OS map link below, infrequent bus route 73 Chelmsford-Maldon-HB).Here
you can watch the comings and goings on the estuary, where there
are two pubs, the JOLLY SAILOR and the OLD SHIP. Real ale available
in both at the last visit but recent reports would be welcome.
The out-of-town option par excellence here is the splendid PRINCE
OF WALES* at Woodham Rd, Stow Maries, a few miles south of Heybridge
and not so far from the railway at South Woodham Ferrers(O.S.
grid ref 830993). Great range of ever-changing beers, and excellent
food, housed in a super weatherboarded building. You might want
to stay here and forget about the game!
