HARROW

Navigating safely to Harrow's ground which lies in an extensive stretch of thirties suburbia near Northolt Park British rail station is a feat in itself deserving of reward, but unless you are prepared to travel further you will be disappointed. For if there is one place which makes the prairies of south Essex look like a copious oasis of plenty, this is it.
Considerable further navigational skills, preferably a degree in A-Z studies, (or at least click on the detailed map link at the foot of this page) will be needed to track down the few worthwhile quarries anywhere near the ground. Coming form the North West, try heading for the QUEEN'S HEAD* in PINNER High Street, the oldest and best pub in the town,(although the *ODDFELLOWS, 2 Waxwell lane, at the end of the High St, is also worth a try and is Good beer guide listed) with an extensive beer menu including Adnams, Youngs and Fullers.
The CASTLE at West St, HARROW-ON-THE-HILL, a good two miles from the ground is another option: West St runs off the High St in the pleasant area near the famous school, half a mile south of Harrow-on-the-Hill station. The Castle is a Fullers pub with an old-fashioned feel and some interesting fittings; and best of all it retains its public bar. Plenty of food complements the good ales on offer.
From the south, Northolt and Greenford have some reasonable options. Most interesting if you've time and perseverance is the BLACK HORSE on the Grand Union canal at Oldfield Lane, Greenford, about a mile and three quarters form the ground, but walkable from Sudbury Hill or Greenford stations. This is also Fullers, and boasts a canalside garden and food too.
Alternatively, still in Greenford, the BRIDGE HOTEL* on the Western Avenue by the Greenford flyover is a big Young's house with recent hotel extension; however, of more interest to us is that lunch and evening food is available.
In Northolt, the PLOUGH, Mandeville Rd, is yet another Fullers' house, this one a postwar place doubling as a thai restaurant and open all day. This is the nearest decent pub to the ground, keep to the A312 south from Northolt Park station or get off at Northolt underground station (shown on detailed map, link below).

Happy hunting!
