GRAVESEND & NORTHFLEET As many will know, the ground is actually in Northfleet, a good two miles from Gravesend itself. If a visit to Gravesend takes your fancy then try the SOMERSET ARMS* (10 Darnley Rd, near the station), with a changing rotation of beers, and usually six available at a time. Multi-room pub fans may prefer the WINDMILL TAVERN* in Shrubbery Rd, near the town centre which also offers guest beers as well as Burtonwood and Webster's. Lunchtime food is available in both of these pubs. Back in Northfleet the ROSE* in Wood St is close by both the station and the ground, and in this Victorian one-bar local you'll be able to drink Kentish beer, Shepherd Neame, from the Faversham brewery. Another decent option in Northfleet is the EARL GREY* at 177 Vale Rd, (near the Cygnet centre), again a Shepherd Neame house but like the Rose, with no food as far as we know. For those of you coming by car, especially from Surrey and Hampshire, another possibility which comes warmly recommended is to visit the CHEQUERS* at Farningham (87 High St) , close to Jct.3 of the M25. This Good Beer Guide pub normally keeps London Pride, Gales HSB and Taylor's (Keighley) and has an adventurous guest ale policy too. The food (lunchtimes) is recommended. |
