CHESHAM

The pleasant setting of this Buckingshire town makes for an attractive awayday and if you like country walks with your football this is the one to go for. The valley of the Chess downstream of Chesham is very agreeable and unspoilt, and if coming by car then using Chenies as a base for a circular walk is a possibility (not far from Chalfont & Latimer station on the Metropolitan Line). The RED LION* in Chenies village usually has Benskins and 6X on draught with one or two others, along with food. It is quite a long walk from here to Chesham however so having a means of transport is advised!
In town itself, the QUEEN'S HEAD(1)* in the old town (116 Church St) is the pick of the bunch:-Recently refurbished to retain its traditional character and two bars, it serves beers frm Brakspears and Fullers as well as a guest, along with Thai food. Closer to the ground is the KINGS ARMS(2) (1 King St) also with new licencees, and Green King, Tetley and Wadworths 6X. Food available.
In the town centre also is the GEORGE & DRAGON (3)(High St), an old coaching inn with four centuries of history, owned by the same proprietor as the King's and with similar beers on offer.
Weatherspoons' tentacles have even permeated Chesham in the form of the LAST POST* (4)(77 The Broadway); another ex Post Office (how did you guess?) with well kept beer and guests as well as the usual.
The WILD ROVER (5) at 2 Amersham Rd (how do they think of these names?) is an Irish-run pub (was the White Horse) with well-kept Ushers, the closest pub to the ground.

Cyclists in particular will appreciate the BLUE BALL* at Asheridge, a small village some 2 miles out of town to the NW set on a ridge overlooking a very attractive valley leading up to the Chiltern escarpment. This family-run free house offers a food menu and up to four changing guest beers. You'll need a map to find it but worth the trouble!

Another out-of-town pub that comes strongly recommended is the LAND OF LIBERTY HOPE AND PLENTY*(!) atLong lane, Heronsgate near Chorleywood, just half a mile from jct.17 (A412) of the M25. Brakspears, Courage and Youngs, plus guests, usually on offer, along with Belgian bottled beers. Lunchtime food.
