BRAINTREE
Far enough into Essex to
avoid being lumped with the South Essex quartet, yet still a hard
place for the discerning drinker to navigate successfully. Choice
is really rather limited, unless you want to stick to the tea
bar. In town, try the *KING WILLIAM IV on the London Road (No.114)
which retains its public bar and serves ales from Ridleys, the
Chelmsford brewery. Pity that the outside gents is no more...
Lunchtime food is limited in scope, and dont expect any food in
the evening.
There is a Wetherspoons in Fairfield
Rd, with the usual fare, which is better than nothing; failing
this the best bets are out of town at Stisted, really a
suburb but 2 miles east on the A120 where you will find the *DOLPHIN,
another Ridley's house with gravity dispense ales and food available,
except Tuesday evenings(!); and the *VINE, Black Notley
which comes recommended. Good guest beer list, always changing,
friendly landlord and food. About three miles south of the town.
