BEDFORD
The New Eyrie ground is a ridiculously long way out of
town to the south in a beer desert and the best advice on getting
there is provided on their website
, (or its 10-15 mins by taxi) but of course the best of the boozers
are IN town, not too far from the Thameslink and Midland
railway station.. Its quite a big place so make sure you have
a map!
Pick of the bunch for the discerning quaffer is the WELLINGTON
ARMS *(1) , Wellington Street, 10 mins walk from the main
town centre. This is the East Anglia CAMRA pub of the year 2001,
and is very much a drinker's pub.'Nuff said! The array of thirteen
hand pumps have a range of Banks & Taylor beers, ever changing
guest ales and real cider. A selection of Belgian beers ore also
available. Filled rolls are to be had at lunchtimes.
The other town
centre choices are dominated by chains, and of these Wetherspoons
are your best bet:. The PILGRIMS PROGRESS (3) , Midland Road,
5 mins from train station on edge of main shopping area, is the
usual layout, large but comfortable with a no smoking area. Also
Wetherspoon's is the BANKER'S DRAFT (4) , High Street, more of
a cafe/bar atmosphere. Both of these have the usual beer suspects
+ guests, and a good menu. Real cider also available.
If you want somewhere else to go you could try the PORTER BLACKS
(5), High Street, opposite the Banker's Draft, a comfortable multi
level pub which can get very busy when showing major sporting
events. Bass bitter available. Food served at lunchtimes.
If you've time for a walk the PHOENIX*, 45 St John's St (follow
High St South over river, just off map) is a nice unfrilly two
bar boozer with a touch of Irishness- the beers are from Charles
Wells, the local brewer, with a guest. Food available.
Special thanks to Tony Burke from Bedford Town FC for his help
and advice with this page!
