NORTHWOOD
Not the sort of place
you expect to find a football team, or a decent boozer- its more
the G & T belt, where the Metropolitan Line finally escapes
close-knit suburbia and heads for the golf courses. Well, the
only thing on offer near the undergoround station and the ground
(map>
) is the WILLIAM JOLLE, 53 Joel Street, a Wetherspoons house;
and frankly if you havent nuch time there is little point looking
for anything else. At least here you should get the usual JD ales
plus a guest or two, and reasonable nosh. But if you have a bit
of time, get off the train at PINNER, the stop before, and here
you will find an old town engulfed by suburbia, and the *QUEEN'S
HEAD, 31 High St, the oldest and best of the options in town.
This sixteenth century pub is much altered but retains character.
Its a Carlsberg-Tetley house so expect Tetley and Burton Ale,
plus guest. Lunchtime food available. If you are making a session
of it, retrace your steps down the High St, turn right , then
2nd right into Waxwell Lane where you will find the ODDFELLOWS,
another C-T pub, with good service and a friendly atmosphere.
Beer is reliable, including good London pride, we are told. Food
seems to be available all lunchtimes except Saturday (!!) so not
very helpful for most visitors.
Coming from the north
or from the M25, leave at J17, and head for the strongly recommended
LAND OF LIBERTY HOPE AND PLENTY*(!) atLong lane, Heronsgate near
Chorleywood, just half a mile from the interchange. Brakspears,
Courage and Youngs, plus guests, usually on offer, along with
Belgian bottled beers. Lunchtime food. The other good out-of-town
option coming from this direction is the *FOX & HOUNDS at
Rickmansworth High St, a nice traditional two roomer with Courage
beers and a guest, plus lunchtime food.
