AYLESBURY
Despite the size of Buckinghamshire's
county town, the discriminating imbiber will probably be disappointed
by the paucity of choice here, but the town centre is nonetheless worth a visit.
The recommended goal is *QUEEN'S HEAD in Temple Square,
very close to the station and right by the Market. This two bar pub goes
back about 300 years although much altered. Adnams, Greene King
and Directors are usually on, plus guest. Lunchtime food including some good specials.
The SHIP, Walton St, close to the station,
is another decent town centre pub where Greene King Abbot and Marstons are the regulars, with guest,
a canal side pub by the basin of the Grand Union where you can
sit outside if the weather is good. Lunchtime food available.
Also worth checking out is the KING'S HEAD in the Market square ,an old 15th century coaching inn with a varied beer range which may include the ubiquitous London Pride.
If you love pub chains,(i) what are you dong on here!?, and (ii) there is a HOGSHEAD,Exchange St, close by
the Market square, where you should be able to sample something worthwhile if you can turn a blind eye to the brutal moderrn 'architecture'.
If you are very pushed for time and want a boozer near the ground you could try the HORSE & JOCKEY on the Buckingham Rd near the Ring Rd interchange, but the beer quality cannot be endorsed here on the evidence that we have.
Out of town, coming via
car and the M40, leave at junction 7 and call at Haddenham, just
off the A418, where there are several decent options, best being
the *KING'S HEAD and the *RED LION in the centre of the village.
